About The Role

Hi, I'm Scott, and I lead the Cloud Engineering team at Jane. I've spent a couple of decades keeping large platforms running and scaling at companies like Loblaw and Achievers, and I joined Jane to help our platform meet its next stage of growth.

Cloud Engineering owns the infrastructure that underpins the whole Jane platform. We keep it running, monitor it, scale it, and add capacity as our clinics grow. We're also the team people come to when they aren't sure where a problem belongs, so we end up working across almost every part of engineering.

Our platform has served Jane well for more than a decade, and we're now approaching an inflection point. A big part of this role is figuring out what it takes to scale it cleanly for the company's next stage of growth.

You'll work alongside other Staff engineers in our team to help shape the long-term vision for our infrastructure alongside our staff and senior staff engineers, then break that vision into pieces we can start delivering now.

Just as important as the technical work is how you show up. The team needs a driver: someone who runs at hard, ambiguous problems, is often first to jump in and help, and can bring several teams together to build consensus to land big ideas. We can't scale Jane on our own, so building partnerships and championing change is core to the job.

You'll work with a modern, cloud-native stack at real scale, with plenty of room to raise the bar for how we use our tools, including AI. If you like solving gnarly infrastructure problems and making everyone around you more effective, I'd love to meet you.

What Impact We're Looking for You to Make
  • Help set the longer-term technical vision for Jane's infrastructure alongside our staff and senior staff engineers, then turn that vision into concrete pieces the team can deliver along the way.

  • Act as a driver on hard, ambiguous problems, looking past the symptom to the real issue and seeing it through to resolution even when it spans several teams.

  • Champion change across engineering by building the relationships and consensus needed to land big infrastructure improvements, since scaling Jane is never a solo effort.

  • Provide technical leadership to other teams, helping them design cloud infrastructure for new features and make sound architectural choices.

  • Improve day-to-day operational health by reducing noisy alerts, hardening the platform, and making the whole system easier to run.

  • Work closely with our Application Security Team to harden our infrastructure against security and compliance requirements.

  • Bring an AI-positive mindset, helping the team get more leverage from AI tooling while respecting that infrastructure changes carry a real blast radius.

What Experience We Need
  • Deep expertise with AWS, including multi-region deployments and high-scale, highly available cloud services.

  • Strong command of infrastructure as code, particularly Terraform.

  • Solid infrastructure architecture skills, with a clear sense of how to assemble AWS building blocks into scalable, reliable systems.

  • Experience operating databases at scale. Including upgrades, scaling, performance tuning and capacity planning.

  • A track record of running large projects and driving consensus across many stakeholders. For this role, that attitude and problem-solving ability matter to us as much as raw technical depth. Can you look past a symptom to find the real problem, then work across several teams to get it solved?

  • Experience operating at a company of meaningful scale that's growing quickly, ideally with a "been there, done that" perspective on scaling infrastructure through rapid growth. You're comfortable somewhere between a small startup and a large enterprise, in that fast-growth middle.

  • An AI-positive mindset and hands-on experience using AI as a coding and research tool, with the judgment to know when to direct it and when to step in. At the staff level, we expect you to guide these tools well and explain the decisions behind your work.

  • Comfort participating in an on-call rotation.

  • Staff engineers here act as technical leaders, so we're looking for someone who sets direction, raises the bar, and lifts up the people around them..

If you don't meet every single qualification but are excited about this role, we'd still love to hear from you.
