Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team, focusing on capital projects and sustaining capital projects for mine and port operations. The successful candidate will leverage their expertise in bulk materials handling, import and export terminals, surface, and underground mining projects to deliver innovative, cost-effective, and practical solutions that enhance the performance, reliability, and safety of our clients' operations. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on a variety of projects, from equipment upgrades to process optimizations, while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

This is a newly created position that can be based in any of AECOM’s Canadian offices with occasional travel to client sites if required.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Design and Support:

  • Develop and optimize mechanical systems and equipment for capital projects, including greenfield works, upgrades, retrofits, and replacements for both surface and underground mining operations.
  • Provide engineering solutions for bulk materials handling systems (e.g., conveyors, feeders, crushers, and storage systems) as part of broader sustaining capital initiatives.
  • Prepare and review technical specifications, engineering drawings, and 3D models for mechanical systems.

Project Delivery:

  • Lead and manage mechanical engineering tasks across all project phases, from initial scoping and feasibility studies to detailed design, procurement, and commissioning.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with client and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct site visits to assess existing systems, gather data, and provide hands-on support during project execution in both surface and underground environments.

Client and Stakeholder Collaboration:

  • Work closely with clients to understand their operational needs and develop tailored engineering solutions for surface and underground mining operations.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including process, structural, and electrical engineers, to ensure seamless project integration.
  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and progress updates to maintain alignment with project goals.

Operational Support:

  • Provide technical support for troubleshooting and resolving mechanical issues in existing surface and underground mining operations.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, cost savings, and increased operational efficiency.
  • Develop maintenance strategies and recommendations to enhance equipment reliability and lifespan.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure all designs and installations comply with relevant industry standards, codes, and safety regulations.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement safety measures in all project phases, with a focus on the unique challenges of underground and surface environments.

Innovation and Continuous Improvement:

  • Stay updated with the latest technologies, trends, and best practices in mechanical engineering, bulk materials handling, and mining operations.
  • Drive innovation by identifying and implementing new tools, methods, or approaches to improve project outcomes.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a focus on mining operations, sustaining capital projects, bulk materials handling systems, and plant mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in both surface and underground mining projects, including equipment design, installation, and optimization.
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as CEMA, ISO, and DIN.
  • Familiarity with Sidewinder and/or Belt Analyst Conveyor Design Applications.
  • Strong knowledge of mining equipment and systems, including conveyors, crushers, chutes, pumps, and piping.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in one or more provinces of Canada.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in developing bulk materials handling system solutions for greenfield projects.
  • Proficiency in mechanical design software and familiarity with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and DEM (Discrete Element Method) tools.
  • Experience with bulk materials handing sustaining capital projects, including equipment upgrades, process optimizations, and plant modifications for both surface and underground environments.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation.
