Lead the Future of Hydrogeology

Are you an experienced hydrogeologist looking to take on complex projects that influence the responsible management of groundwater resources across Canada? At ERM, we're helping some of the world's leading mining, oil & gas, and industrial organizations address critical water challenges while supporting a more sustainable future. As a Senior Consultant, Hydrogeologist based in Calgary, AB, Vancouver, BC, or Smithers, BC, you will play a key role in delivering technically rigorous hydrogeologic solutions, leading field programs, and contributing to high-profile projects that have lasting environmental and business impact. If you're passionate about applying science to real-world challenges and want to grow your career with a global sustainability leader, we'd love to hear from you.

Why This Role Matters

You'll have the opportunity to make a tangible impact on major, multimillion-dollar projects while advancing your career with a global sustainability leader. This is your chance to join a rapidly growing team and influence how industries manage water responsibly, both locally and globally.

What Your Impact Is

In this role, you will help strengthen ERM's hydrogeology practice by delivering high-quality technical work and supporting key clients across Canada. You will lead and execute groundwater investigation and monitoring programs for major mining and oil & gas projects, applying strong field and analytical skills to generate defensible, actionable results.

Your work will contribute directly to solving complex water and sustainability challenges throughout the full project lifecycle. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams across Canada and ERM's global network, sharing technical knowledge, developing best practices, and contributing to innovative, integrated hydrogeologic solutions that help clients achieve their environmental and operational objectives.

What You'll Bring

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in hydrogeology, environmental sciences, or geology (with hydrogeology courses) or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of consulting experience in hydrogeology field work planning and execution including groundwater monitoring and sampling, hydraulic conductivity testing, groundwater data analysis, and reporting.
  • Eligible for Engineer in Training (E.I.T.)/Geologist in Training (G.I.T.) or professional designation (P.Eng./P.Geo.) in Alberta (AB) or British Columbia (BC).
  • Understanding of hydrogeological processes in mining, oil & gas, and industrial context.
  • Strong analytical skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Excel for managing large datasets, experience preparing tables, figures, and maps, and a foundational understanding of hydrogeology (groundwater flow, aquifer types, and basic hydraulic testing).
  • Familiarity with groundwater analysis software such as AQTESOLV or AquiferTest Pro.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel for long-term field work programs.
  • Ability to walk long distances on uneven terrain and carry heavy field equipment in outdoor environments.
  • Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.
  • This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with coding languages (e.g., Python, VBA, R).
  • Experience with conceptual site model development and numerical model development.

Key Responsibilities

Groundwater Investigation & Field Program Leadership
  • Plan and coordinate groundwater investigation programs, including multi-year monitoring networks, drilling campaigns, and well installation activities.
  • Supervise field teams and subcontractors, ensuring all activities comply with ERM's health and safety protocols, project requirements, and QA/QC standards.
  • Participate in extended field rotations, including up to 2+ weeks at remote mining or oil sands sites, often in variable climate conditions.
  • Participate in field programs that may require travel to remote locations by truck, All Terrain Vehicle (ATV), or helicopter, depending on site conditions and project needs.
Field Program Execution
  • Supervise field programs, including:
    • Monitoring groundwater levels using manual measurement methods and dataloggers.
    • Sampling groundwater for field parameter measurements and laboratory analysis.
    • Supervising drilling, installation, and development of monitoring wells and pumping wells.
    • Borehole logging using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) as appropriate for the project.
    • Programming, installing, downloading, and troubleshooting pressure transducers and vibrating wire piezometers (VWPs).
    • Conducting aquifer testing to determine hydraulic properties and sustainable yield of aquifers (e.g., slug tests, step-drawdown tests, and constant-rate pumping tests).
    • Ensuring all field procedures comply with safety requirements, quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) standards, and project protocols.
Technical Analysis & Data Management
  • Collect, interpret, and analyze aquifer data using industry-standard methodologies to support conceptual site models and hydrogeologic assessments.
  • Assist with data management and technical analyses, including:
    • QA/QC of field data and laboratory analytical results for data reduction and data compilation.
    • Managing and visualizing large datasets, including pressure transducer and VWPs time series graphs.
    • Developing hydrographs, groundwater elevation contour maps, trend charts, Piper diagrams, and supporting figures.
    • Preparing and organizing input files for analytical groundwater models for the estimation of hydraulic properties of aquifers (e.g., hydraulic conductivity, transmissivity, storativity, and sustainable yield).
Reporting & Project Delivery
  • Contribute to technical documentation, including:
    • Preparing technical proposals, reports, memorandums, and field reports.
    • Assisting in the development of technical and health and safety plans for field programs.
