Job DescriptionAECOM Burnaby is seeking an experienced and strategic Senior Biologist to provide senior support within our Ecology, Planning and Permitting team. This full-time position is ideal for a technically skilled professional with a strong understanding of British Columbia’s environmental regulatory landscape and demonstrated leadership experience in large-scale infrastructure permitting. The successful candidate will be responsible for guiding multi-disciplinary teams, mentoring staff, and supporting major project approvals in BC and Western Canada.
Responsibilities for this position include:
Support a team of IAP professionals in the Burnaby office and across Canada, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous growth.
Provide senior technical expertise in aquatic biology, impact assessment and permitting processes, including the preparation and review of EA applications and regulatory filings.
In-depth knowledge of B.C. Environmental Assessment processes, particularly for major infrastructure, energy, and transportation projects.
Support or lead client engagement, regulatory consultations, and environmental planning meetings.
Oversee the development of work scopes, technical deliverables, and environmental management plans.
Provide leadership and coordination for aquatic studies; field experience in fish and fish habitat assessments is considered a strong asset.
Prepare strategic proposals and budgets, lead business development initiatives, and support growth in the Environment business line.
Interface with regulators, clients, Indigenous communities, and other AECOM technical leads.
Anticipate project challenges and deliver practical, proactive solutions.
Leads integration of safety and quality across projects, aligning with AECOM’s values and performance standards.
Mentor junior and intermediate team members across technical and regulatory functions.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant environmental discipline (e.g., Aquatic Biology, Terrestrial Ecology, Environmental Science, Marine Biology).
Minimum 6 years of consulting experience leading environmental projects in British Columbia or across Canada.
Registered Professional in British Columbia (e.g., R.P.Bio.).
experience conducting fish and fish habitat field assessments, including the use of BC standards
Strong working knowledge of provincial and federal environmental legislation and permitting (e.g., permitting under the Water Sustainability Act, Species at Risk Act, Canadian Environmental Protection Act, Fisheries Act, Riparian Areas Protection Act, Environmental Management Act) and working with the BC Energy Regulatory.
Managed the environmental monitoring for construction projects
Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
Preferred Qualifications:
12+ years of professional experience, including major infrastructure project approvals and regulatory coordination.
Expertise in BC Environmental Assessment Act and federal Impact Assessment Act processes.
Experience with land management and environmental assessment requirements in the Arctic,
Expertise in fisheries studies, including habitat assessment, population studies, and working with other professionals to develop habitat enhancement and offset plans.
Strong leadership, project management, and staff development experience within a consulting environment.
Effective communicator with demonstrated success in client relationship management and proposal development.
