Job Summary
The Research Assistant is a position within the UBC Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. The incumbent will be responsible for supporting multiple grant funded projects involving people living with a treatable or chronic infectious disease, and associated areas of study, specifically with two projects: HPV Anal Screening Guidelines Provider Survey Database and BC CARMA-CHIWOS Collaboration Study. The team is based  at BC Women's Hospital + Health Centre and is supported by the Women’s Health Research Institute (WHRI).


The WHRI is devoted to improving the health and health care of women and people who identify as women, through knowledge generation, serving as a catalyst for research in women’s health and supporting an expanding provincial and national network of women’s health researchers, policy makers and healthcare providers.


The incumbent will report directly to the Dr. Melanie Murray. In addition, the incumbent will have a workspace in the Shaughnessy Building on the BC Children's and Women's Hospital campus. 
Organizational Status
Reports directly to the Principle Investigator, Dr. Melanie Murray. Works closely with the Lab Research Manager, and other lab team members. Liaises with other local WHRI researchers, their teams and possibly industry partners.
Work Performed

  • Maintains research related records and databases, entering data according to established protocols
  • Assists with development and review of data collection forms
  • Assists with the preparation of ethics applications and renewals
  • Assists with the preparation of abstracts, manuscripts, and presentations, with responsibilities conducted in support of the HPV Anal Screening Guidelines Provider Survey Database.
  • Supports team efforts with internal and external partners
  • Creates and distributes study materials
  • Orders and maintains inventory of study materials (for example, study kit supplies and snacks provided during multi-hour research visits); assists in stocking supplies
  • Assists with the routine sorting and logging of samples, with responsibilities conducted in support of the BC CARMA–CHIWOS Collaboration Study.
  • Organizes and participates in in-person and virtual research meetings
  • Attends regular internal meetings of study team members
  • Performs basic literature reviews for either or both of the projects
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Research Assistant is required to conduct all research activities in an ethical manner in accordance with the University of BC and the Tri Council Policy 2. All procedures and data recorded as part of the research work must be accurate and must reflect the work performed. Errors could result in damage to the reputation of the Murray Research group, the PI and the University of British Columbia.

Works under direct supervision of the PI, Dr. Melanie Murray, from oral instructions and to established procedures /SOPs.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to applicants with intermediate to advanced skills in MS Office (particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Experience in a research environment is considered an asset
  • Experience working with REDCap databases is considered an asset
  • Experience working with marginalized populations is considered an asset
  • Preference will be given to candidates who live in the Lower Mainland and can travel to BC Women’s Hospital
