The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary

The Research and Project Coordinator leads the day to day coordination and assigned research activities of the Slocan research development project. The project brings together BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR) investigators, the Slocan Site Redevelopment team, and patient and family partners to establish a program of research alongside clinical care at the new Slocan Site Centre for Children with Health Complexity. The position leads evidence reviews, facilitates research and community engagement, conducts qualitative data gathering and analysis, and translates findings into research plans, consent process documentation and knowledge mobilization outputs. Working with Dr. Stephanie Glegg and Dr. Matt Carwana, the Co Principal Investigators (Co PIs), the coordinator contributes to identifying research priorities, developing initial project concepts and planning how research can be embedded within the Centre. The position exercises judgment and initiative in organizing and delivering this work, with scientific direction and approval of research approaches provided by the Co PIs.

Organizational Status

The coordinator reports to the Co PIs and works closely with the Project Advisory Circle (PAC), Slocan Research Committee, clinical planning team, researchers, clinicians, patient and family partners, trainees and students. The coordinator also liaises with Research Ethics Board (REB) representatives and external research organizations and experts to gather information, coordinate consultation and advance project deliverables.

Work Performed

• Develops and maintains project work plans, timelines and deliverable trackers. Coordinates day to day priorities and contributions from the research team, clinical partners, families and collaborators; identifies delivery issues and recommends adjustments, referring changes in scope, methodology or resources to the Co PIs.
• Coordinates project and PAC meetings, records decisions and follows up on actions. Maintains project records, monitors delivery against internal BCCHR grant requirements and applicable institutional policies and agreements, and prepares mid term and final funder reports.
• Leads a rapid review of published and grey literature on embedding research consent in clinical care. Extracts and synthesizes evidence within the methodology established by the Co PIs and identifies findings and gaps for discussion.
• Consults REB representatives and researchers with relevant experience. Integrates literature, expert advice, focus group findings and committee input into written and visual syntheses that inform project planning.
• Works with investigators and the PAC to develop research themes, priorities and proposed proof of concept projects, incorporating feedback and contributing to the planning and evaluation of research alongside clinical care.
• Drafts focus group and interview guides and coordinates participation and session arrangements. Leads or co leads sessions using the approach determined by the Co PIs and approved research procedures.
• Manages project data, transcripts and research records, including organization, cleaning, secure storage and sharing. Checks data quality and maintains confidentiality and the integrity of the research record.
• Conducts thematic analysis using the agreed analytical approach, including established coding frameworks where appropriate. Documents analytical decisions, synthesizes findings across sources and develops written and visual summaries, with research team support for interpretation.
• Coordinates REB applications, amendments and responses to provisos; prepares supporting documents for Co PI review and tracks approvals and requirements.
• Leads discussions with REB representatives and works with the Slocan Research Committee and clinical planning team to explore integration of standardized consent into clinical operations. Maps proposed processes and drafts consent forms and procedures, integrating evidence and consultation findings in accordance with Co PI decisions.
• Oversees implementation of project research activities in accordance with ethics approvals, UBC and research site requirements, and equity principles. Applies Indigenous Ownership, Control, Access and Possession (OCAP) principles where relevant and refers unresolved ethical or privacy issues to the Co PIs.
• Builds relationships and coordinates engagement with families, clinicians, investigators and external partners, using accessible communication and community based participatory research practices.
• Oversees coordination of knowledge mobilization events and develops community facing displays, visual summaries and presentations that accurately communicate findings.
• Drafts substantive content for reports, manuscripts, articles, abstracts, posters and presentations, and supports Co PIs in preparing grant applications.
• Guides junior research staff, trainees and students, reviews the quality of their assigned work and supports completion of project activities. Performs other related duties.

Supervision Received

Reports to and receives general direction from the Co PIs. The coordinator independently organizes work plans, timetables and day to day activities, contributes ideas and recommendations, and provides regular progress updates to the Co PIs and relevant project groups.

Supervision Given

Provides guidance, feedback and quality review for junior research staff, trainees and students assigned to Slocan. Explains procedures and expectations, coordinates their contributions and identifies work requiring correction or further guidance with the Co PIs.

Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• A graduate degree in a relevant discipline and experience supporting applied health research in an academic environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, are preferred.
• Experience conducting literature reviews, qualitative interviews or focus groups, thematic analysis and synthesis of findings from multiple evidence sources.
• Demonstrated skills in research project coordination, data management, research ethics processes and knowledge mobilization.
• Knowledge of respectful care, anti oppression and equity in child health services and perinatal research, with experience applying anti racist and anti oppressive approaches to community engagement, research and knowledge translation.
• Knowledge of Indigenous cultural safety, OCAP principles and respectful, decolonizing research practices.
• Ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse partners, facilitate participation and communicate with diplomacy, tact and unconditional positive regard.
• Strong academic or technical writing and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate findings clearly in written and visual formats to academic and community audiences.
• Experience with qualitative data collection and analysis software such as NVivo, project management tools such as Asana, and intermediate proficiency in Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word.
• Ability to coordinate concurrent activities, prioritize work, solve problems and meet deadlines independently and collaboratively, while responding calmly and effectively to diverse people and situations.
• Lived experience of identities, circumstances or backgrounds underrepresented in the university is an asset.
