Digital Education and Instructional Designer

Designs and develops accessible digital learning experiences for adult and post-secondary learners. Collaborates with subject matter experts to convert specialist content into engaging e-learning modules, simulations, multimedia, and assessments. Manages instructional design projects, configures and maintains LMS courses, supports users, analyzes learner data, troubleshoots technical issues, and continuously improves course effectiveness using feedback and educational best practices.
Under the direction of the Director of Curriculum, Quality and Compliance, the Digital Education & Instructional Designer is lead digital education and instructional designer for Oxford International Career Colleges. They are responsible for creating high quality and andragogically sound learning experiences for the various programs across all campuses. This include providing the guidance and support to the various subject matter experts (SMEs) to transform their content into appropriate digital learning experiences.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional Design – Collaboration & Project Management
- Work closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) to understand course objectives and content requirements, ensuring alignment with educational goals.
- Manage instructional design projects from initiation to completion, coordinating with the Director of Curriculum, Quality, and Compliance to ensure adherence to timelines and quality standards.
- Develop detailed project plans, including timelines, milestones, and deliverables, and monitor progress to ensure projects stay on track.
- Facilitate regular meetings with SMEs and project stakeholders to review progress, address issues, and incorporate feedback.
- Provide expert guidance on adult learning principles and educational best practices, ensuring that instructional materials are designed to effectively meet learner needs.
- Offer recommendations on instructional strategies and methodologies, incorporating innovative approaches to enhance the learning experience.
- Oversee the implementation of instructional design projects, ensuring that all components are integrated and functioning as intended.
- Evaluate project outcomes and gather feedback to assess the effectiveness of instructional materials and make data-driven improvements.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including designers, developers, and other stakeholders, to ensure cohesive project execution.
- Maintain thorough documentation of project processes, decisions, and revisions for future reference and continuous improvement.
Design, Development and Implementation of Digital Education Components
- Assess and analyze learner needs, course objectives, and content requirements to design effective educational materials.
- Create clear, measurable learning objectives that align with course goals and desired learner outcomes.
- Develop engaging and interactive digital learning materials, such as e-learning modules, simulations, and interactive exercises, using tools like Articulate.
- Integrate multimedia components (videos, audio, animations) into learning materials to enhance engagement and learning effectiveness.
- Utilize a variety of educational technology tools and platforms to create and enhance learning experiences.
- Implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to make digital content accessible to all learners, including those with disabilities.
- Work closely with subject matter experts to gather content expertise, validate information, and ensure that learning materials are accurate and relevant.
- Develop prototypes of digital learning materials and conduct usability testing to gather feedback and make necessary improvements.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of design processes, guidelines, and instructional strategies for consistency and future reference.
- Keep abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in instructional design and digital education to continually enhance learning materials.
Learning Management System Management
- Accurately upload and organize course materials, including documents, multimedia, and interactive elements, onto the learning management system (LMS).
- Design and configure course structures within the LMS, including modules, units, and navigation pathways.
- Manage user roles and permissions, ensuring appropriate access to course content and features for instructors, students, and other stakeholders.
- Oversee student enrollment and registration processes, addressing any issues related to course access and user account management.
- Identify and resolve technical issues related to LMS functionality, content display, and user interactions.
- Monitor and analyze learner progress and performance data within the LMS, generating reports to evaluate course effectiveness and engagement.
- Regularly update and maintain course content to ensure it remains current, accurate, and relevant.
- Integrate third-party tools and resources with the LMS to enhance the learning experience and streamline administrative tasks.
- Provide support and assistance to users, including troubleshooting issues, answering questions, and offering guidance on LMS functionalities
- Ensure that LMS content and user data comply with relevant regulations and security standards to protect learner privacy and data integrity.
Person Specifications
Education & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Educational Technology, Adult Education, Learning & Development, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience
- Formal training or certification in instructional design, e-learning development, adult education, or educational technology is an asset
Experience
- Demonstrated experience in instructional design and digital learning development, ideally within post-secondary, career college, vocational, or adult education.
- Experience working with subject matter experts to translate technical or specialist content into engaging, learner-centred educational experiences.
- Hands-on experience developing e-learning content using Articulate 360 (Storyline and/or Rise) or comparable authoring tools.
- Experience administering or managing content within a Learning Management System (LMS), including course setup, content management, user access, troubleshooting, and reporting.
- Experience managing instructional design projects from initial scoping through development, implementation, review, and continuous improvement.
- Experience applying adult learning principles, instructional design methodologies, accessibility standards, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
- Experience incorporating multimedia, interactive activities, assessments, simulations, or other digital learning approaches into course design.
- Experience using learner feedback, engagement data, or other measures to evaluate and improve learning effectiveness.
Knowledge & Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of adult learning principles and contemporary instructional design practices.
- Strong proficiency with e-learning authoring and digital content development tools.
- Good working knowledge of LMS functionality and digital learning environments.
- Understanding of accessibility requirements and inclusive learning design.
- Ability to develop measurable learning outcomes and align learning activities and assessments to those outcomes.
- Strong digital literacy and ability to quickly learn and evaluate new educational technologies.
- Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple course-development projects and competing deadlines.
