Join us. At PagerDuty, you'll tackle complex problems, collaborate with kind and ambitious people, and help build a more equitable world—all in a flexible, award-winning workplace.

PagerDuty is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join our diverse, customer-focused team. As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will report to the Sr. Director, IT Operations & Security and be primarily responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining our critical network infrastructure, while also supporting Systems Engineering functions.

Your work will ensure our global offices and cloud environments are highly available, performant, and secure, while our internal systems run smoothly. This is an exciting opportunity to architect and evolve our global network, apply a security‑first mindset, and leverage automation across both networking and systems domains.
This role is expected to come into our Toronto office at least 2 times per week, so you can thrive in your new role and fully embrace being a Dutonian!

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Architecture & Design
Design and implement scalable solutions across our global infrastructure—including office networks, endpoints, and cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure)—with a focus on reliability, security, and user experience.
  • Operations & Reliability
Own day-to-day operations of core infrastructure services (network, endpoints, identity, and access), ensuring availability, performance, and scalability across sites and cloud platforms.
  • Incident Response & Troubleshooting
Provide Tier 2/3 incident response and problem-solving for complex infrastructure issues (network, systems, and connectivity), driving swift resolution and thorough root cause analysis to minimize impact.
  • Security & Access Controls
Implement and maintain security controls and policies across the network and systems, including firewall rules, segmentation, zero-trust principles, and IAM (Entra, Azure AD, Okta) to ensure secure, consistent access.
  • Monitoring, Analysis & Optimization
Use monitoring, logging, and packet analysis tools to detect, diagnose, and remediate performance and reliability issues; proactively recommend and implement improvements across infrastructure components.
  • Automation & Integrations
Develop and maintain automation (e.g., Python, PowerShell, Bash, Ansible, Terraform, Workato, Zapier) to standardize configurations and streamline workflows for endpoints, network, identity, and access management.
  • Cloud & SaaS Infrastructure Support
Partner with infrastructure and security teams to ensure network, endpoint, identity, and SaaS integrations follow best practices in Azure, AWS, and/or GCP, supporting secure and scalable hybrid environments.
  • Support & Enablement
Provide advanced support to employees globally using ITSM tools such as Jira, and contribute to internal knowledge sharing and, where needed, user-facing training materials.
  • Documentation & Standards
Maintain clear, comprehensive documentation for infrastructure configurations, standards, runbooks, and procedures to support repeatable and reliable operations.
  • On-Call & Alerting
Create, manage, and respond to alerts (PagerDuty) for infrastructure services and participate in the on-call rotation to ensure 24/7 coverage.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • 8+ years of experience in enterprise network engineering and operations.
  • 5+ years in a systems administration/engineering or IT support environment.
  • Professional network certification (e.g., CCNP, JNCIP, or equivalent) or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Extensive experience with TCP/IP networking and routing protocols (e.g., BGP, OSPF), as well as experience with VPNs, wireless, and modern networking concepts in large-scale distributed environments.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with network automation using Python, Ansible, Terraform, or similar tools.
  • Experience working with IAM tools (Entra, Azure AD, Okta) and processes (account lifecycle, permissions, privileged account management).
  • Experience supporting a mixed endpoint environment including macOS and Windows.

Technical Skills:

  • Deep knowledge of routing, switching, VPN, DNS, DHCP, and network segmentation.
  • Experience with firewall platforms (e.g., Palo Alto) and network security solutions (e.g., Zscaler, Cloudflare WARP).
  • Proficiency with packet analysis and network monitoring tools.
  • Strong scripting skills (e.g., Python, PowerShell, Bash).
  • Experience with configuration and patch management tools (e.g., Intune, Jamf) and asset management solutions.
  • Experience working in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, and/or Azure), including cloud networking concepts (VPCs/VNets, peering, security groups, routing).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Strong background in network security, including DDoS mitigation, IDS/IPS, and zero-trust architecture.
  • Experience designing and optimizing global WAN and hybrid cloud connectivity.
  • Familiarity with the full VDI lifecycle, from design and implementation to optimization and ongoing maintenance.
  • Track record of mentoring engineers, leading cross-functional technical initiatives, and influencing architecture and strategy in a global team environment.
  • Ability to independently lead troubleshooting efforts for complex, cross-domain (network + systems) issues.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a distributed, global team, and to influence leadership in setting group objectives and technical direction.
