Job Description

AECOM Buildings + Places, the Architecture team of AECOM, are seeking a Specification Writer with knowledge of technical buildings and building science. 

This position can be based out of our Burnaby, Calgary or Edmonton offices. Candidates based elsewhere will need to adjust their work schedule to align with the Pacific time zone.

AECOM Buildings + Places Canada (B+P Canada) is a vibrant and growing fully integrated team spanning architecture, all the building’s engineering disciplines, landscape architecture, urban planning, urban design, economics and asset management for design and infrastructure projects. Project assignments may include, although not limited to: Transit and Municipal, Commercial, and Institutional projects, Justice, Education and Government.
Major Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage specification production, workflow procedures, master specifications, and specification BIM integration.
  • Work closely with project managers and consultants to produce project manuals for a variety of projects and sectors. Attend client meetings and advise and discuss project specific requirements.
  • Review shop drawing and submittals, and provide support for contract
    administrators and project managers.
  • Review new products, and advise design team on project specific material and
    assembly selections.
  • Assess construction drawings and details to apply construction quality standards.
  • Knowledgeable in building science and able to assess details and components of the building envelope.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

In order to be considered for this position, candidates must meet the below requirements, at a very minimum. 

  • College Diploma in relevant field of study + 4 years of relevant experience, including 3+ years of experience in specification writing

Demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education may be considered.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Candidate to have a degree in architecture, building science, architectural technology or equivalent
  • Prefer 6+ years of experience in specification writing
  • Must have knowledge of specification formats – Masterformat, Uniformat and narrative approaches
  • Must have adequate computer skills in MS office software
  • Must have good working knowledge of building science and construction processes.
  • Prefer CSC certification as a CSP or RSW
  • Membership in Construction Specifications Canada and Specifier courses would be an asset.
  • Familiar with a variety of project delivery methods and standard forms of construction contracts
  • Must have a good working knowledge of recent contract law as it applies to construction
  • Experience in Construction Administration would be an asset
  • LEED AP would be an asset
  • Valid driver's license
