How You Will Contribute:Reporting to the Senior Manager, Optical Engineering, as a Senior Product Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting the conversions process of optoelectronic wafers into known good die (KGD), such that they are suitable for packaging into optoelectronic modules. This support role will include capturing and understanding the basic physics and design intent of the product design with a view to both maintaining and improving the product performance over time, at the wafer, die and package levels. In addition, this position will include working with the wider team to influence and ensure the development of a reliable product, transferred successfully to our CM partner and manufactured successfully at or better than cost objectives. This position requires a candidate with a strong, demonstrated record in the development and manufacture of advanced optoelectronic modules and devices in a Telecom or Datacom environment.
Working closely with our Design team and manufacturing partners, who have responsibility for developing and maintaining manufacturing/test equipment and capability, the Product Engineer shall act as the lead for transferring new designs from R&D and work with the various parties to plan and action the transfer to our contract manufacturer (CM) and then maintain them in production.
- You will be the prime for the optoelectronic die used in the manufacture of package modules and act as support for failure analysis at the wafer/die level, working closely with local Ciena and CM engineers, along with the foundries that supply our optoelectronic wafers
- You will work with R&D and the Operations team to:
- Define production requirements and specifications in terms of process and test
- Develop and maintain process and test equipment in manufacture, constantly improving yields at the wafer, die and package levels
- Review and update PFMEA for wafer to die conversion processes
- Develop and deliver training programs for CM operators and engineers
- Manage the product life cycle from product launch to mass production
- You will manage and track product yield and develop detail product cost reduction plan according to targets, and track performance to plan through BOM management of the products in mass production.
- You will work with Test Engineering to create and manage automated analysis tools and key performance indicators (KPIs)
- You will be responsible for the development of the packaging materials for products and associated recycling programs
The Must Haves:
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline and 5+ years product experience in the design, manufacture or test of optoelectronic products. Therefore a solid understanding of the principles and theory of optical devices such as lasers, modulators, detectors, optical sub-assemblies and transceivers is required.
- Knowledge and experience of the production processes related to the manufacture of optoelectronic devices.
- Understanding of Product Lifecycle Management coupled with a demonstrated track record of launching complex optoelectronic module products to market.
- Problem solving and the ability to solve technical issues in a high-pressure environment and resolve issues locally and remotely.
- Experience working in a global marketplace interacting with multi-functional, multi-locational teams. Therefore, good written and oral communication skills are required.
- Strong computer and analytical skills, including database management and data analysis tools.
- Willingness and ability to travel as this position will involve a higher than average level of travel (estimated at around 20%) to support the products during transfer to the CM and maintain the product in manufacturing. Travel will initially be largely within North America but will involve some Asian travel as the product transfers to manufacture.
