At AECOM, you will join a global team of 50,000+ professionals driven by a shared purpose: delivering a better world. Our work improves mobility, resilience, clean water access, and community connectivity across Canada.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and independently organize work plans, design tasks, and deliverables for medium- to high-complexity tunneling and underground projects.
  • Apply commercial numerical modelling software, including finite and distinct element tools, to support advanced analyses.
  • Develop, verify, and validate analytical design spreadsheets for geotechnical and structural calculations.
  • Provide expert guidance in soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and ground–structure interaction to multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Contribute geotechnical and structural expertise for underground components on major transportation and water conveyance projects.
  • Provide technical input for tunnel design methodologies, means and methods, and proposal development.
  • Design tunnels using TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) and SEM/NATM (Sequential Excavation Methods).
  • Design SOE (Support of Excavation) systems for shafts, pump stations, portals, cut-and-cover structures, and deep excavations.
  • Participate in constructability reviews, value engineering workshops, and risk management activities.
  • Prepare contract documents, design reports, technical specifications, and drawing packages.
  • Review and supervise the work of intermediate engineers and mentor interns, especially on numerical modelling tasks.
  • Collaborate closely with internal disciplines, external partners, and clients to support successful project delivery.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of AECOM’s tunneling standards, tools, and best practices.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, Geotechnical Engineering or a related field and 6+ years of relevant experience in tunneling, underground structures, geotechnical engineering, or related disciplines or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

    Preferred Qualifications

    • 8+ years of experience in tunnel design, underground construction, or major infrastructure programs (highly preferred).
    • Master’s Degree in Geotechnical or Structural Engineering.
    • Experience with both large-diameter (5m+) tunneling and trenchless technologies.
    • Technical expertise in TBM tunneling, SEM/NATM, shaft design, ground improvement, and deep excavation support systems.
    • Strong knowledge of geology, hydrogeology, rock mechanics, and ground behavior.
    • Proficiency in analytical and numerical methods for underground works, including 2D/3D modelling.
    • Ability to work independently and make informed technical decisions with minimal supervision.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical concepts clearly.
    • Strong teamwork, coordination, and client-facing skills.
