About the Team:

We are looking for an experienced and motivated individual to join our Mortgage Investments Team. This is an exciting opportunity to join a small team responsible for managing our mortgage investment funds with significant additional growth expected in the coming years. The Mortgage Investments team invests $1.2 billion of our client funds in commercial mortgage loans primarily in Canada and also the United States.

Purpose of the Role:

The qualified candidate will review and underwrite new commercial mortgage investment opportunities, review due diligence and pre-funding conditions, prepare investment summaries and reports, assist with managing our growing mortgage investment portfolio, and help execute our growth plans, in addition to other related duties. This position is located at our head office in Vancouver, BC.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing and analyzing new commercial mortgage loan opportunities, renewals, and prepayments
  • Underwriting commercial property values
  • Investigating and identifying potential areas of credit risk relating to new commercial mortgage loans (including the borrower, property, market, etc.)
  • Preparing detailed written credit/investment summaries
  • Assist in the ongoing financial monitoring, review, and analysis of existing mortgage loans
  • Preparing regular and ad-hoc reports
  • Communicate clearly with internal and external stakeholders
  • Work in alignment with corporate objectives, investment guidelines, and risk tolerances
  • Keep up-to-date with evolving policies and procedures
  • Stay abreast of commercial real estate and mortgage industry news and trends
  • Perform other duties as required

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 7+ years of directly relevant work experience in a commercial mortgage related role
  • Strong understanding of commercial real estate underwriting and valuation methods with a focus on income producing asset classes
  • Experience writing clear, detailed reports incorporating facts and figures with a high level of technical proficiency and attention to detail is required
  • Knowledge of the Canadian commercial mortgage market is required
  • Knowledge of the U.S. commercial mortgage market is considered an asset
  • A high proficiency in MS Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint including analyzing and presenting data with sophisticated charts & graphs
  • Strong command of written English language is mandatory
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree or relevant degree in commerce, real estate, economics or finance
  • AACI, CFA, CA, CAIA, or CPA considered an asset
  • The ability to be registered as a Submortgage Broker in British Columbia within 6 months is required
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada for any employer

  • Ability to work in a dynamic and fast paced, deadline driven environment
  • Ability to focus on complex tasks for long periods of time with competing priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and collaboration under pressure

Compensation & Benefits Package:

This position comes with a base salary range of $150,000 - $170,000 plus a competitive performance bonus, and participation in our Asset Management profit-sharing program. Base salary will be commensurate with experience, skills, and qualifications.
