General Accountability:

The Laboratory Assistant will work as part of the Spectroscopy team to accomplish a variety of lab tasks and lab maintenance. These responsibilities will include conducting solution preparation, instrument batching, and some routine instrument analyses of geological samples in accordance with ALS Health and Safety policies and ALS quality procedures.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Prepare instrument solutions and perform sample dilutions;

  • Prepare instrument run batches for analysis;

  • Assist in instrument calibration setup and operations;

  • Maintain the timely storage and disposal of sample solutions for the department;

  • Prioritize workloads according to daily stats and turnaround commitments;

  • Maintain and organize instrument logs, equipment, reagent, and solution records;

  • Operate and perform routine analyses and maintenance on ICP-AES, ICP-MS, and AAS instruments;

  • Evaluate data using instrument software and GEMS;

  • Identify & correct QC-related issues by ensuring the quality of the analytical data meets   ALS standards;

  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment and communicate all safety concerns to Operations Supervisor or Manager; 

  • Assist in other sections of the laboratory as required;

  • Additional duties as assigned by Senior Laboratory Analyst, Operations Supervisor, or Manager.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with proven ability to work to deadlines;

  • Ability to work independently or as a part of a team in a fast-paced environment;

  • Good organizational, analytical, and mechanical skills;

  • Capable of managing workflow in a time-efficient and quality-conscious manner;

  • Good English communication skills both written and verbal;

  • Good MS Office skills, specifically MS Word, Excel, and Outlook;

  • Full training will be provided.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school completion or equivalent required;

  • Some post-secondary chemistry courses are preferred;

  • Minimum of 1-year laboratory experience in analytical chemistry or related field preferred.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift up to 45lbs;

  • Ability to sit and/or stand for up to 7.5 hours per day;

  • Ability to work in afternoon and night shifts.

  • Manual dexterity to perform repetitive tasks.

  • Please note that ALS Group operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.

Our benefits include: 

  • An estimated hourly pay of $22.77 at the time of posting. Individual compensation is determined by factors such as job-related skills, relevant experience, education and/or training. 

  • Additional shift premiums of $2 per hour for evening shifts and $4 per hour for night shifts, if applicable.
