POSITION SUMMARY:
The VFX Head of CG is a senior leadership role responsible for driving the efficiency, volume, and quality of all Computer Graphics (CG) output for television series. This individual will define and enforce robust technical standards across the entire CG pipeline—including asset creation, rigging, lighting, and FX—to meet the accelerated weekly/bi-weekly delivery schedules common in episodic production. The Head of CG must balance artistic excellence with rigorous pipeline compliance. We primarily use a Houdini pipeline with Karma/Solaris.
MAIN DUTIES:
The Head of CG will own the episodic pipeline. They will define, maintain, and strictly enforce standardized, optimized CG workflows and naming conventions necessary for high-volume, rapid iteration required by episodic shows. They will be responsible for quality control and consistency, establishing clear, non-negotiable standards for all look-dev, lighting, and simulation assets to ensure shot-to-shot and episode-to-episode continuity, especially when multiple artists are working concurrently. The ideal candidate must be well experienced in VFX CG roles, also bringing years of experience in a leadership position (CG Supervisor or Head of CG) specifically within high-volume episodic television or streaming series. They must bring demonstrable expertise in pipeline architecture and optimization for speed and efficiency (e.g., batch processing, automated quality checks), and have a mastery of pipeline integration between key packages (e.g., Maya/Houdini for scene prep, proprietary tools, and a core renderer like Arnold/V-Ray/Redshift). - Team Leadership & Mentorship: Manage and mentor CG Supervisors and Leads, fostering a collaborative environment focused on problem-solving and delivering on-time dailies and turnovers.
- Technical Roadblock Resolution: Serve as the highest point of escalation for complex technical challenges within the CG department, rapidly diagnosing and resolving pipeline bottlenecks impacting deadlines.
- Production Partnership: Work in lockstep with the VFX Producer and Production Managers to accurately scope tasks, manage artist load against aggressive show schedules, and flag potential delays proactively.
- Tool Standardization: Oversee the strategic development and deployment of custom tools and scripts that specifically automate repetitive tasks common in episodic work (e.g., batch processing, automated QC checks).
- Asset Reusability: Champion the development of high-quality, modular CG assets that can be efficiently reused across multiple episodes or seasons to maximize throughput.
- Vendor Management (if applicable): Liaise with external vendors providing CG elements, ensuring their deliverables strictly adhere to the studio’s established episodic pipeline specifications.
- Onboarding & Training: Develop and lead accelerated training modules for new hires on the studio’s specific episodic pipeline procedures.
