  Early morning Producer, Director, The Early Edition

Are you seeking a leadership role that demands strong news judgement and the ability to connect with audiences? Do you have the ability to act decisively under pressure, produce the stories Vancouverites and British Columbians care about most, and work closely with passionate journalists?

CBC News Vancouver is looking for a  Producer assigned to Direct Vancouver’s number one radio and streaming program, The Early Edition and podcast This is Vancouver. You will be part of the radio/audio current affairs and video streaming  production team working with associate producers, reporters and hosts to deliver highly crafted editorial material for local programs and all CBC B.C.'s content platforms. The successful candidate will have strong critical thinking, audio and video production skills, live directing experience, writing and desktop editing ability, news judgment and be able to work flexible hours including early mornings.

You take action when news breaks and are able to lead complex teams working across platforms with competing priorities and deadlines while ensuring high standards. You are organized, demonstrate sound editorial judgement, and bring diverse voices to your work. You put the audience at the centre of your journalism.

You will ensure that all CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate.

Your responsibilities:

  • Direct live morning radio and streaming program, The Early Edition
  • Work with the morning teams to respond quickly to breaking news events as they unfold.
  • Maintain high standards for journalism by vetting others’ work to ensure accuracy, fairness and balance and to meet CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  •  Produce two to three weekly episodes of the podcast This is Vancouver
  • Assign stories to associate producers and oversee the work of the early morning team.
  • Pitch, research, gather and produce original story ideas for audio, video and social media programming that will engage and inform the audience, deepen our connections in the community, and elevate a range of voices.
  • Collaborate with teams to lead and deliver live and developing coverage on multiple platforms.
  • Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of contacts and community members.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across CBC to develop and break stories, plan and produce features, and coordinate long-term coverage.
  • develop background, introduction, and line of questioning, conduct or arrange for any necessary research, and ensure the briefing of hosts. 
  • Maintains contact files.
  • Assign and create content for digital social platforms as required.
  • Participates in the evaluation of all aspects of the production.
  • Adheres to and follows the journalistic standards and practices to achieve the high quality standards CBC is known for.

Your profile:

  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily news environment.
  • Five years of comparable and relevant experience that demonstrates knowledge of the industry preferred.
  • Ability to lead complex teams and work independently with superior problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, original stories that meet the needs of our audiences.
  • A proven track record of connecting with local communities.
  • Superior writing skills across platforms, and experience in gathering, editing and packaging audio and video.
  • Ability to present stories live on-air, from within the studio and out in the field.
  • Ability to assign teams and manage media assets.
  • Knowledge of emerging storytelling formats and willingness to embrace change and new tasks across all CBC platforms.
  • Community connections and a deep understanding and appreciation of the diversity of perspective and opinion in Metro Vancouver.
  • Familiarity and proven connections with Black, Indigenous and People of Colour communities, people living with a disability, and other underrepresented communities in British Columbia and across Canada.
  • Passion for the Metro Vancouver area and B.C. - both stories and issues
  • A proven work ethic, strong communication skills and a positive, team-first attitude.
  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of three years of recent, related experience.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
