Are you passionate about strategically managing corporate and indirect tax risk and obligations? We’re looking for a Director, Tax to join us at Thinkific! 

As the Company’s first Director, Tax at Thinkific, you will be a high-impact member of a high-performing finance team, reporting to the VP, Finance.  As the internal tax expert, you will be charged with assessing current tax issues across indirect tax and corporate tax, driving our tax strategy and mid-long term tax planning, while ensuring compliance with all taxation-related matters. 

Your key goal will be to build Thinkific’s corporate tax and indirect tax strategies for mid-long term success, while ensuring effective compliance. Here’s how you’ll accomplish this: 

  • Create and execute mid-long-term corporate tax, transfer pricing and indirect tax strategies aligned with Thinkific’s goals and operations
  • Research and provide recommendations for any current tax matters 
  • Provide journal entry review to accounting team for tax related journal entries 
  • Oversee the reconciliation and remittance of indirect tax in all applicable jurisdictions 
  • Support sales tax programs by managing Thinkific's collection and remittance on behalf of customers, and provide escalation support for the customer service team
  • Work with tax accountants to prepare the year-end corporate tax note and complete all income tax returns (Canada and US) 
  • Act as the key contact for year-end audit and quarterly reviews for all tax-related questions
  • Manage the distribution of 1099k forms
  • Take on ad-hoc tax related projects as the Company grows 

The person we have in mind likely:

  • Has 10-15 years of experience in corporate and/or indirect tax roles, including 5+ years in a leadership role with strategic responsibilities
  • Is a strategic and pragmatic thinker who can form clear, actionable tax strategies and communicate and implement actions needed 
  • Is a hands-on problem solver who is comfortable rolling up their sleeves to tackle tax issues and meet compliance requirements 
  • Is highly organized and detail-oriented with excellent time management and communication skills
  • Holds a professional CPA designation
  • Loves to learn and grow. They’ve found (and keep looking for) ways to level up their skills in this field, whether that’s through formal education, gaining professional experience, or maybe even building their own business

These things would also be nice, but we think you could learn them on the job: 

  • Experience in SaaS and Product Led Growth businesses 
  • Familiarity with Workday Financials ERP
  • Familiarity with Stripe or other payment processing systems
  • Familiarity with Avalara 

The recruitment compensation range for this position is $150,000 - $190,000 CAD. Your specific compensation within this range is determined based on your job-related skills, knowledge, experience, and our internal equity assessment.
