About the Role
Cover Genius is entering its next phase of growth, and this role is the chance to build the data function that takes us there. You won't be inheriting a finished org chart, you'll be designing how data operations and analytics work as one function: a single, trusted set of definitions for the metrics that matter, and a team the business turns to first.
This is a key contributor role within our data domain, and one of the driving forces behind delivering our data vision. You'll work closely with data engineering, data science, product, and actuaries to turn that roadmap into real value for the business, our customers, and our partners.
You'll lead two teams, one running data operations and analytics, one running merchant partner & regulatory reporting, and you'll sit as the bridge between the business and our technical data teams, translating business questions into asks for data engineering, data science, and our AI adoption function, and making sure what they build actually lands with the people who need it. This also means giving actuaries and other insurance specialists access to data they don't currently have, so they can do their own in-depth analysis rather than working from a finished report.
Key Responsibilities:
Own the Data Operations & Analytics Function: lead both the data operations/analytics team and the merchant & partner reporting team, setting priorities that answer real business questions rather than growing the metric count for its own sake.
Business Ownership of the Semantic Layer: define what our core metrics mean and where the source of truth lives (GWP, revenue, claims ratio, and others), and get business sign-off on the logic behind them. When a metric doesn't exist yet, this team builds it.
Data Governance Documentation: own the governance framework behind the semantic layer, metric ownership, definition standards, and change control, so metric trust doesn't depend on someone remembering how a number was built.
Internal BI Ownership: own the internal BI tool end to end and drive adoption across the business. We're the team that gets other teams building their own dashboards and insight, not waiting on a ticket, including training people how to use the tool properly. Where a team can't build what they need themselves in their own domain, we build it for them.
Merchant & Partner Reporting: own reporting accuracy, reconciliation, and regulatory reporting for our merchant and partner relationships, and build the operating rhythm that catches issues before they reach a partner or a regulator.
OKR Instrumentation: translate business and domain OKRs into accurate, trusted data tracking, and make sure every domain has the data assets it needs to measure its own progress.
Drive Data Use Across the Business: look for where data, AI, and automation can remove manual work or replace ad hoc spreadsheets with real systems, ahead of being asked, including automating workflows within our own team.
Team Leadership & Development: grow a team that spans junior analyst to manager, build career paths, and raise data literacy across the business so leaders trust the numbers and ask sharper questions.
Skills and Experience:
10+ years in data or reporting operations, including 4+ years leading managers, not just individual contributors.
A track record of fixing unclear ownership and accountability gaps across technical and business teams, in addition to running your own team well.
Fluency in modern data stacks; dbt, BigQuery, semantic layers, BI tools.
Experience defining metrics and governance, what a number means, who owns it, where it lives, in a business with more than one data team.
Comfortable presenting to C-suite and cross-functional leadership on data strategy and risk.
Insurance, insurtech, fintech, or another regulated, data-heavy industry is a plus, particularly experience supporting actuarial or underwriting teams, or running fraud/risk analytics.
Experience building a roadmap with dependencies across multiple technical and business teams, with the project management discipline to scope, sequence, and track it to completion.
Experience running cross-team coordination as a discipline: async updates, meetings with a clear owner, and open items that actually get closed out rather than left in a thread.
Proficiencies and Attributes:
Moves fluently between an executive conversation on strategy and a technical one with data engineering, without needing to own the technical call.
Takes ownership of unresolved problems, unclear owners, poor request quality, broken reporting, instead of waiting for someone else to claim them.
Commercially minded enough to know which metrics actually matter to the business.
A people leader who manages managers and invests in a team spanning multiple levels.
Raises the bar on data literacy and requests quality across the whole business, not just within the team.
Understands the business drivers behind each team's numbers, not just the numbers themselves."
Builds trust and alignment through influence, not authority, earning buy-in by showing people the shared benefit rather than asking them to comply.
Takes an ambiguous, cross-system problem and turns it into a clear framework and a workable solution, then operates independently enough to scope and drive it without waiting to be told how.
