About the role
Samsara seeks a high-performing, creative and proactive Data Disclosure Strategy Counsel to join our Legal team. Driver exoneration is part of Samsara’s Connected Operations™ Cloud platform for fleet safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Our customer’s data may also become relevant to third parties, such as law enforcement, regulatory investigators, or parties to a civil litigation matter, as described here. This role is essential in protecting Samsara and its customers’ interests around data privacy and data protection. The role will primarily support Samsara Legal’s litigation function, managing Samsara's responses to subpoenas and similar requests seeking Samsara customer and other data. The Data Disclosure Strategy Counsel will also collaborate with the larger Legal, product, sales, and support teams, as needed to prosecute and defend litigation involving us and our customers and effectively manage risk.
In this role, you will:
- Advocate for Customer Data Privacy and Protection Under Applicable Law: Provide counsel and guidance to resolve subpoenas or other legal requests seeking Samsara customer data, and manage litigation of such matters in civil and criminal courts as necessary.
- Advise Internal Stakeholders to Address Customer Data Requests: Effectively liaise with external legal counsel, Samsara customers and their counsel, and internal Customer Support, Sales and Engineering stakeholders. Counsel internal partners on strategies for resolving third-party requests seeking customer data.
- Uplevel Strategies and Processes for Responding to Customer Data Requests: Draft and champion legal and operational policies around responding to subpoenas and protecting Samsara customer data from disclosure. Pressure test and continuously improve existing processes for addressing and tracking customer data requests. Be curious and intellectually honest, and possess the ability to jump into unfamiliar areas and learn while doing.
- Enhance Responsiveness to Changing Legal and Legislative Frameworks: Monitor developments in federal and state case law and regulations, devising and implementing strategies that best position the company to manage customer data requests while driving business objectives.
- Deliver Guidance and Insight: Support the broader legal team in providing advice and counsel to stakeholders across the organization, ensuring alignment among all facets of the enterprise. Identify, assess, and manage legal risks germane to subject-matter areas, working closely with cross-functional teams to devise strategies that deliver on business objectives.
Minimum requirements for the role
- J.D. degree
- Active membership in at least one US state bar and eligibility to obtain registered in-house counsel status (if required by the State Bar in the assigned work location)
- 4+ years of experience at a law firm and/or commensurate in-house or government experience
- Extensive practice focused on the Stored Communications Act, Electronic Communication Privacy Act, Wiretap Act, Pen Register/Trap and Trace Statute; MLAT (Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties) and other data privacy frameworks.
- Direct experience working with U.S. or international law enforcement authorities.
- Demonstrated business judgment and client counseling skills
- Strong ability to manage complex, cross-functional projects with attention to details, excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Experience with risk assessment, project management, and compliance reporting.

Samsara’s Compensation Philosophy: Samsara’s compensation program is designed to deliver Total Direct Compensation (based on role, level, and geography) that is at or above market. We do this through our base salary + bonus/variable + restricted stock unit awards (RSUs) for eligible roles. For eligible roles, a new hire RSU award may be awarded at the time of hire, and additional RSU refresh grants may be awarded annually.
We pay for performance, and top performers in eligible roles may receive above-market equity refresh awards which allow employees to achieve higher market positioning.
The range of annual base salary for full-time employees for this position is below. Please note that base pay offered may vary depending on factors including your city of residence, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
$116,620—$156,800 USD
