Job Description

AECOM is seeking a passionate, skilled and innovative Associate Designer to join our growing Tunneling Practice in Canada. This role is ideal for a technically strong, collaborative professional with extensive experience in tunnel design, underground structures, and geotechnical/structural analysis for major infrastructure programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design of tunnels using TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) and SEM (Sequential Excavation Methods), under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Use commercial software tools (e.g., Finite Element or Distinct Element software) to conduct basic structural and geotechnical analyses.
  • Develop and verify calculations for structural and geotechnical verifications, ensuring accuracy and compliance with standards.
  • Provide input on soil and rock mechanics, ground-structure interactions, and underground engineering principles to support project teams.
  • Assist in preparing technical inputs for tunnel proposals, including methodologies and techniques.
  • Contribute to the design of SOE systems for shafts, pump stations, and cut-and-cover structures.
  • Participate in Health & Safety (H&S) reviews, constructability assessments, and risk management planning.
  • Support the preparation of design reports, technical specifications, and drawings.
  • Work closely with other engineers, professionals, and clients to ensure project alignment and integration.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree + 2 years of demonstrated equivalency or experience and/or education.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil, Geotechnical or Structural Engineering with experience in tunneling and underground engineering or Master’s Degree in structural or geotechnical engineering is preferred.
  • 3+ years’ experience in foundations, underground structures, tunnels, trenchless structures, etc
  • Experience in different tunneling methods, shaft design and ground improvement, SEM tunneling, TBM tunneling.
  • Knowledge of Geotechnical, Hydrogeology, Geological engineering and Rock mechanics.
  • Knowledge of analytical and numerical analysis methods for underground works and tunnels.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills applied to design activities.
  • Excellent oral and written skills as well as interpersonal/teamwork skills.
