As part of our continued global expansion, we are seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join our Finance team. Reporting to the Controller, this hands-on role will support financial reporting, accounting operations, tax compliance, financial analysis, budgeting and forecasting, and management reporting. The successful candidate will support the Controller with month-end and year-end reporting, SR&ED claims, GST/PST filings, management reporting, sales analysis, commission calculations, Power BI reporting, and financial planning. This position is well suited to a CPA with strong technical accounting skills who is comfortable working across both financial accounting and analysis in a hands-on environment..

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close, including journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and financial schedules.
  • Prepare GST/HST and PST returns and remittances and support other tax and regulatory filings.
  • Coordinate the financial portion of SR&ED tax credit claims, including eligible expenditures, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
  • Support external accountants, year-end audits, corporate tax filings, and government reviews.
  • Prepare budgets, forecasts, cash flow projections, and financial models.
  • Perform revenue, gross margin, expense, profitability, and variance analysis.
  • Prepare monthly sales reports and reconcile sales data to accounting and operational systems.
  • Calculate and review quarterly sales commissions for North American and international sales teams.
  • Develop and maintain Power BI dashboards, management reports, and KPIs.
  • Prepare financial presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint for senior management.
  • Support multi-entity accounting, intercompany transactions, inventory, fixed assets, and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Maintain and improve accounting policies, internal controls, and finance processes.
  • Provide guidance and review support to accounting team members.
  • Support the Controller with ad hoc analysis and special projects.

Qualifications

  • Canadian CPA designation.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting, financial reporting, and financial analysis experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards, financial reporting, month-end and year-end close, and internal controls.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and management reporting.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Experience with Power BI or similar business intelligence and reporting tools.
  • Experience with QuickBooks Enterprise or other ERP/accounting systems.
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines.

Preferred Experience

  • The following experience would be considered an asset:
  • SR&ED tax credit claims and related financial documentation.
  • GST/HST and PST compliance.
  • Biotechnology, life sciences, manufacturing, or another R&D-intensive business.
  • Multi-entity accounting and intercompany transactions.
  • Inventory or cost accounting.
  • International operations.
  • Strong Power BI dashboard development and data visualization skills.

Compensation

  • Salary CAD $90,000 – $100,000 base, commensurate with education, qualification and experience
  • Performance-based bonus
