About Us

Enkel is a cloud-based accounting and financial operations firm serving 300+ Canadian businesses and not-for-profits. Our mission is simple: deliver accurate, timely, and decision-ready financials so our clients can build stronger organizations.

We believe great financial reporting should do more than check compliance boxes. It should help leaders make better decisions, grow their organizations, and create meaningful impact.

Our team moves fast, embraces technology, and constantly pushes the bar higher for financial clarity and client service. If you care deeply about using financial data to drive real-world decisions, you will fit right in.

About The Role

We are seeking a client-focused Assistant Controller to support a portfolio of clients and help elevate the financial experience we deliver.

This is not a traditional back-office accounting role. You will play a key role in supporting client financial strategy, helping founders, executive teams, and non-profit leaders better understand and use their financial data.

You will contribute to high-quality financial reporting, support client relationships, and mentor junior team members.

This role is designed for growth, with a clear path to Controller. High performers will take on increasing ownership of client relationships, financial leadership, and team management over time.

Key Responsibilities & Goals

Client Financial Support

  • Support monthly financial review meetings with clients
  • Translate financial data into clear, actionable insights
  • Assist with cash flow forecasting, budgeting, and financial planning
  • Support year-end processes and audits
  • Identify risks and escalate issues with recommended solutions
  • Contribute to technical accounting discussions and complex transactions
  • Help clients better understand their financial position

Operational & Quality Oversight

  • Prepare and review financial statements to ensure accuracy and compliance
  • Support full-cycle accounting and complex journal entries
  • Participate in internal quality audits across your portfolio
  • Maintain high file quality standards at or above 95 percent
  • Ensure timely and accurate sales tax filings, including GST, HST, PST, and PSB
  • Identify process improvements to enhance efficiency and quality

Team Support & Development

  • Mentor and support bookkeepers and junior accountants
  • Guide technical questions and day-to-day execution
  • Participate in team training and knowledge sharing
  • Support Controllers in driving accountability and delivery standards

Client Success & Growth

  • Build strong relationships with client teams
  • Respond to client communication within one business day
  • Support onboarding and ongoing client success initiatives
  • Identify opportunities to provide additional value to clients

What You Bring

  • 6 to 10 years of experience in accounting or financial operations
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian GAAP and tax regulations
  • Direct experience working with non-profit organizations is required
  • Strong understanding of Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations
  • Experience with QuickBooks Online, Xero, Dext, and cloud-based tools
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Effective communication skills and a client-first mindset
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

Career Progression

You will gain hands-on experience in client advisory, financial leadership, and team development.

You will work closely with experienced Controllers and CFOs, gradually take on more ownership of client relationships, and expand your scope across financial strategy and quality oversight.

High performers will be supported in progressing into a Controller role as they demonstrate readiness.
